TDI Couldn't Hold Out A Little Longer

Sothe air conditioning went out on my wife’s Golf Tdi with 69,000 miles on it. We finally got it into the dealer, they said some internals broke in the compressor and that they recommend replacing the compressor, condenser, and receiver drier to the tune of $2,375. Now I don’t want to put money into it knowing that we could potentially get rid of the damn thing in four weeks if dieselgate rumours are true. I don’t know what to do but I think we’re done with VW after this.

Update: Just got off the phone with VW, no assistance from them

This is unbelievably common, we see the compressors lock up all the time. It’s an inexcusable weakness. Also, that repair cost is exorbitant. It’s expensive no matter what, but it can be done for nearly a grand less without skimping on parts.

If you get cold air at all, the compressor is working. If it’s only weak on certain vents, either they system is low on refrigerant or it has a flap motor problem.

no cold at all, center 2 vents dont work anymore.

The fan was blowing as normal, heat as normal, just the compressor wouldn't run so the coldest was ambient.

Yeah, depending on if VW corporate will assist I'll likely look into an independent repair shop.

Hmm. Those should just blow ambient air if it’s on max cool, not on recirc and the AC isn’t on with the vents set to face level. Might have a flap issue.

Which is the best kind of typo!

Unbelievably common issue. It’s usually the Compressor control valve. A $65 dollar part that takes about 20min to replace. Dealers won’t do it.

I was reading into that when I was first trying to diagnose it. I’m planning on asking them for more detail on their diagnosis and if there was pressure in the lines. I'll probably dig a little deeper myself. For $65 it might be worth the gamble and just try swapping it out.

Had a VW Golf, been there, done that.

Eventually you’ll own a different car, and your wallet will thank you for that.

I’m having a similar problem with my 11' TDI and I had the same thought. For $65 and 20-30 min of my time it’s worth checking out.

Except from what I’m reading, you have to evacuate and recharge the system which isn’t something most people have the means to do in their garage.

That’s probably the only difficult part. I’m using a shop near me for that. They’re charging me $20 to evacuate the system and they said it’ll probably be around $50 to recharge.
